Quote:
A massive natural disaster nearly destroys a city in Italy, while corruption and political double-dealing may well finish the job in this documentary from filmmaker Sabina Guzzanti. In April 2009, the city of L’Aquila in Central Italy was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the MMS scale; over three hundred people lost their lives, nearly 1,500 were injured and approximately 65,000 lost their homes, while many of the city’s most historic buildings and artwork were turned to rubble in the disaster. Swift and decisive action was needed from the Italian government, and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, hoping to win back the good will of the people following a number of embarrassing scandals, used the L’Aquila earthquake as an opportunity to burnish his reputation. Berlusconi pledged to rebuild L’Aquila, and to bring global attention to the city’s troubles he arranged for the G8 Summit to be moved from Sardinia to L’Aquila. However, Italy’s Civil Protection Agency, an organization designed to deal with public crises, is run by one of Berlusconi’s cronies, Guido Bertolaso, who was also plagued by scandal, and together they used their power to channel emergency monies to their colleagues without public oversight. Meanwhile, over two thirds of those displaced by the L’Aquila earthquake are still waiting for new housing, many haven’t even been able to return to the city, and no one knows when or if the great city will ever return to its former glory. Draquila, L’Italia Che Trema (aka Draquila: Italy Trembles) received its world premiere at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Droll French comedian Noel-Noel essays the title role in Le Pere Tranquille (The Quiet Daddy). Contrary to expectations, the star isn’t a secret father, but in fact the unknown head of a WW2 resistance movement. By playing the fool whenever the Nazis are around and about, Noel-Noel is able to conceal his double life and successfully carry out his various sabotage missions. This deft combination of comedy and melodrama builds to a particularly suspenseful climax. Le Pere Tranquille was directed by Rene Clement, who also helmed the classic “underground” film Battle of the Rails. (All Movie Guide)

Luis López Carrasco – El año del descubrimiento Aka The Year of the Discovery (2020)

In 1992, when the Olympics and the Expo at last presented Spain as an emerging new democracy, the de-industrialisation policies were met with riots in the southern town of Cartagena. The locals remember those days.

Luis López Carrasco was 11 years old when he saw the Spanish town Cartagena’s parliament burn on TV. A significant fact is that, now, those around him in his adulthood don’t seem to remember. With his second feature, The Year of the Discovery—a split-screen epic of 200 minutes and 45 characters—he tries to understand the economic, social and political events that led to it. Drawing on the testimonies by those who remember it, the film travels back in time to present workers and unemployed people, of all different ages, discussing at a café the various political and personal concerns of that time. Individual memories thus become grouped in a film-document for present and future generations, atoning for a collective pact of forgetfulness as recent as not even 30 years ago. What happened on an economical and political level is not foreign to many other countries: the Spanish liberal government pushed for an accelerated process of de-industrialisation in the name of a supposed economical progress, leaving the working class in distraught and the trade unions in despair.

That the viewer spends the almost entirety of the film listening to these more or less casual conversations, immersed in the interior of a café is of no small significance. A bold and effective storytelling choice from López Carrasco which mimics that original act of him and his co-screenwriter Raúl Liarte who—imbued in a remarkable spirit of civic commitment— interviewed the workers and union leaders who had rarely been heard before. A monumental ode to the role of cinema as an act of listening and of rescuing from oblivion what dominant History might not want to keep a memory of.

Kusum then starts boarding school with a transition to her at an older age. She gains a friend in Podmini who admires Kusum’s innocence. When Kusum visits home, she takes to helping out at the home of Nimal’s mother, Mrs. Satharasinghe. On one such visit Nimal engages Kusum in a relationship. They fall in love though Kusum starts to feel guilty due to her lower class status. Soma is chosen to be part of a beauty contest and Kusum and Nimal take the chance to spend time together. Mrs. Satharasinghe finds out about the encounter and confronts Kusum causing her to reveal her relationship with Nimal. Mrs. Satharasinghe scolds her and relieves her of her duties helping out at their home. Driven by guilt, Kusum breaks off all contact with Nimal. She questions if this is her fate.

Alain Resnais – L’année dernière à Marienbad AKA Last Year at Marienbad (1961)

A cinematic puzzle, Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad is a radical exploration of the formal possibilities of film. Beautifully shot in Cinemascope by Sacha Vierny, the movie is a riddle of seduction, a mercurial enigma darting between a present and past which may not even exist, let alone converge. The film stars Giorgio Albertazzi as an unnamed sophisticate attempting to convince a similarly nameless woman (Delphine Seyrig) that they met and were romantically involved a year ago in the same enormous, baroque European hotel. In the end, it hardly matters — they’re not characters so much as pawns anyway. Hypnotically dreamlike, Last Year at Marienbad is a surrealist parody of Hollywood melodrama, a high-fashion romance with a dark, alien underbelly. According to screenwriter Alain Robbe-Grillet, the movie is a pure construction, without a frame of reference outside of its own existence — the lives of its characters begin when the lights go down, and conclude when they come back up.

“The Inside Storyo of a Great U.S. Criminal Investigation”
Frank Warren is a treasury agent assigned to put an end to the activities of a powerful mob crime boss. The agent struggles to put together a case but is frustrated when all he finds are terrified witnesses and corrupt police officers. Although most informants end up dead, Agent Warren gets critical information about the mob from an unlikely source.

The film was based on an article entitled “He Trapped Capone,” the first part of the autobiography Undercover Man by Federal Agent Frank J. Wilson, which was serialized in Collier’s in 1947. (Wikipedia)

Quote:
“A superior crime thriller in the semi-documentary style beloved by Hollywood in the late 1940s…[the film] achieves an authenticity rare in the genre. Perhaps even more impressive is the acknowledgment that mob crime affects not only cops and criminals, but innocents too: witnesses are silenced, bystanders injured. And Lewis – one of the B movie greats – directs in admirably forthright, muscular fashion, making superb use of Burnett Guffey’s gritty monochrome camerawork.”

Carlos Diegues – Chuvas de Verão AKA Summer Showers (1978)

70-year-old widower living in a poor Rio de Janeiro suburb falls in love again when he finds a woman of approximately the same age.

Quote:
“‘The life isn’t like the river that flows tirelessly nor like the sun that goes and comes back everyday. The life is like a summer shower, sudden and transient, that evaporates during the falling.’
When Isaura (Miriam Pires) reads this quote to Afonso (Jofre Soares), the viewer is already submerged in “Summer Showers” (1978), Carlos Diegues’ masterpiece. And I don’t use the word “masterpiece” mistakenly: the magistral ability in screenwriting, directing and cinematography, aside from the great interpretative effort, makes this film one of the best from Brazil.”

Christian Marquand – Candy (1968)

Candy is a 1968 sex farce film directed by Christian Marquand based on the 1958 novel by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg, from a screenplay by Buck Henry. The film satirizes pornographic stories through the adventures of its naive heroine, Candy, played by Ewa Aulin. It stars Marlon Brando, Ewa Aulin, Ringo Starr, John Huston and Enrico Maria Salerno. Popular figures such as Sugar Ray Robinson, Anita Pallenberg, and Florinda Bolkan appear in cameo roles.

From Flick Fest:
When I started watching Candy I got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach during the first 5 – 10 minutes. Ewa Aulin appeared as the titular girl and looked pretty enough but didn’t really seem like a great actress. John Astin was also onscreen so that was a plus. But would I be subjected to a couple of hours of trippy, dippy, hippy hijinks or would the film be something other than that? Thankfully, it was a great mixture of both and as soon as Richard Burton’s character turned up (a self-aggrandising poet named MacPhisto) I was laughing hard and ready to journey alongside the onscreen assortment of oddballs.

Based on a novel by Terry Southern (a loose adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide), Candy is directed by Christian Marquand and adapted for the screen by Buck Henry and both do a fantastic job.

The story concerns Candy and all who fall for her (which happens to be pretty much everyone) as she travels around with her father and her uncle (twins, both played by the great Astin). There’s the poet played by Burton, a Mexican gardener played by Ringo Starr, a half-baked military man played by Walter Matthau, a brilliant doctor played by James Coburn, Chalres Aznavour’s hunchback criminal, an artistically-minded film director and the mystical Grindl (played by Marlon Brando, showing a style of comedy that I never expected of him in a fantastic and fun performance). Then there’s the worrying lust that her uncle (identical to her father) has for her.

While Candy may, at times, feel like no more than a series of linked up skits it’s more cohesive and linear than something like The Magic Christian (another work based on Terry Southern’s writing) and more consistently entertaining and amusing. The script is full of many absolute gems and I must say that I’m surprised to find that this isn’t used as an oft-quoted comedy goldmine, which it certainly is.

The performances are pretty inconsistent but the joy here is in watching the bigger star names have a hell of a lot of fun – Ringo Starr may not be the best actor here but he is not onscreen for as long as the great Burton or any of the other star players.

The character of Candy is so naïve that it borders on the dumb but this seems to have been played up for comic effect too (or, at least, that’s the way I like to view it) and works out just fine in the context of the lusty punchlines used for each segment.

With a finale that nicely allows the audience to catch up, if ever so briefly, with a favourite character or two, Candy proves to be a pleasant surprise after that unsure beginning and while there’s certainly an infusion of “The Age Of Aquarius” and free love to everything it’s all tempered by some sharp dialogue that’s delivered with relish by A-list stars of the 60s having an absolute blast.
