Sofia Coppola – The Virgin Suicides [+extras] (1999)

Quote:
A group of male friends become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents in suburban Detroit in the mid 1970s.

Slant wrote:

It makes sense that the décor inside the Lisbon home is so bland. It’s never garish in that kitschy ‘70s kind of way (like Allison Janney’s living room in The Ice Storm). Much like Frances McDormand’s doting mother from Cameron Crowe’s overrated Almost Famous, Mrs. Lisbon (Kathleen Turner) desperately tries to find a scapegoat for the adolescent angst festering inside of her home, placing blame on the popular music that her daughters listen to. Director Sofia Coppola doesn’t portray her character as some fanatical conservative though one can blame the death of the woman’s daughters on her obsessive notions of familial security. Throughout the film, she hovers quietly in the background—her watchful gaze more menacing than her actual actions imply. The fact that Mrs. Lisbon believes that her dead daughters “never lacked in love” suggests a woman completely blinded by the nature of her maternal instinct. The Virgin Suicides is narrated omnisciently by a group of men who knew the Lisbon girls 25 years ago. After the suicides, the boys made it a mission to collect scattered items from the girls’ lives. Once Lux Lisbon (Kirsten Dunst) abandons curfew, the four living Lisbon girls (the fifth sister, Cecilia, killed herself one year earlier) are imprisoned inside their house by their mother (Turner, in post-therapy Serial Mom mode) and their pussy-whipped father (James Woods). The doting father is so burdened by grief that he speaks to plants about their photosynthetic processes. The performance (arguably the actor’s best) is sad yet brimming with life, much like the film itself. The film’s narrators are forced to entertain the girls by providing them with their restricted pleasures. The boys call the girls on the telephone, letting them listen to the music that plays on their stereo. But as much as the boys desperately try to understand these girls, the girls remain but a distant memory. Although Edward Lachman’s gorgeous cinematography contributes to the film’s nostalgic glam, Coppola’s dreamy paean to stilted adolescence has a universal appeal. Gracefully surreal, the film says as much about the mysteries of female sexuality as it does about what lies behind troubled picket fences. Coppola waxes poetic on female subjectivity, dreamily detailing the imprisonment of girls whose boys desperately try to understand them. The narrator speaks of youth as if it existed and still exists in a near-fugue state. In this respect, the film is as much a relevant view of adolescence and male/female relations as it is an act of remembrance. Scenes from the film (first kisses, gossiping about neighbors) are sinewy in nature and seem lifted from the pages of a lost photo album.

Richard Rush – Freebie and the Bean (1974)

Museum of the Moving Images writes:
Taking full advantage of Caan’s versatile ability to play both a strapping intimidator and limber comedian, Freebie and the Bean is an early entry in the buddy comedy genre that partners him with Alan Arkin as squabbling San Francisco police detectives. While ostensibly in pursuit of mob boss Red Meyers (Kruschen), the real action takes place between the mismatched Freebie Waters (Caan) and Benito Vazquez (Arkin), who leave the city cowering in fear of their technically friendly fire and careering, crashing cars. Directed by Richard Rush (The Stuntman) and shot by László Kovács (Easy Rider, Close Encounters of the Third Kind), is full on, unbridled entertainment, riddled with hyperbolic chase sequences and viciously hilarious repartee.

Synopsis:
Henry Palfrey, new pupil at the College of Lifemanship at Yeovil, recounts his depressing history to the principal, Mr. Potter. The proprietor of a small family business, he is bullied in his office by his chief clerk; he is humiliated by head waiters; he has been tricked by two second-hand car salesmen into buying a decrepit and costly wreck of a car; he has lost his girl, April Smith, to the insufferable Raymond Delauney; and he has allowed Delauney to beat him at tennis. A short course in Lifemanship reverses the situation. Under Potter’s paternal supervision, Palfrey returns to wreck the nerves of the chief clerk; to make the car dealers victims of an even more sensational swindle (he exchanges the wreck for a new sports car and £100); to practice gamesmanship on a harassed Delauney and to win back April Smith. His reversion to sincerity in proposing to April comes as something of a shock to Potter, who rapidly recovers to see here the inauguration of a new ploy. The professor of Lifemanship also acquires a new pupil, Delauney.

Roberto Benigni – Pinocchio (2002)

Plot Synopsis from allmovie.com by Andrea LeVasseur
Academy Award-winner Roberto Benigni adapts the classic children’s tale by Carlo Collodi for the big-budget family-oriented comedy Pinocchio. In his usual fashion, Benigni directs and stars, this time as the little puppet boy made out of wood. The familiar story begins as a log of pinewood falls out of a cart and lands in front of woodcarver, Geppetto (Carlo Giuffré), who carves the puppet out of longing for a son. When the puppet begins to come alive and cause trouble, Geppetto is arrested and Pinocchio is left to his own naïve worldview. After getting a stern warning from the Blue Fairy (Benigni’s wife and producer Nicoletta Braschi), Pinocchio sets out to reunite with his father, become a real boy, and succumb to some desire for adventure. Along the way, he meets a number of characters played by mostly Italian stage actors, including Franco Javarone, Peppe Barra, and Kim Rossi Stuart. The popular Italian comedy team Fichi d’India plays the roles of the Cat and Fox. Released by Miramax in the U.S., the film received an English-dubbed soundtrack with the voice talents of Glenn Close, David Suchet, and Breckin Meyer as Pinocchio.

Orson Welles:
The Territory of others is a treasure that must be cherished by future generations of film lovers as well as by those of today’s generation. All who see this movie will be touched and will find the presence of magic.

Daniel Deshays:
If we had to defend the idea that creativity takes precedence over the cinematographic genre, it would suffice to show / listen to this animal film. It was built as we no longer know how to do it: sound and image together. The editor Jacqueline Lecomte plays with the composer Michel Fano who invents here his own language in a sound and musical hybridity. One of the first environmental films. A poetic universe that Orson Welles described as “treasure to cherish by generations of future moviegoers”.

Quote:
For seven years, the directors set out to discover the animals of Europe hunted from their territories: pink flamingos from the Guadalquivir, Icelandic seals, fallow deer and moose from Poland, etc., refugees in remote areas with difficult access, such as cliffs or marshes. Man, the hereditary enemy, had to watch, scrutinize, wait and wait again. Seven years of shooting animals in the wild so that the spectator can become a stealthy witness to an unknown life, this is the challenge so well met by the directors

Federico Fellini – Otto e mezzo AKA 8½ [+commentary] (1963)

$
0
0

Quote:

8 1/2 weaves fluidly through the visually intoxicating landscape of Federico Fellini’s subconscious, seemingly to seek inspiration and validation for his life and work. In an opening scene that symbolizes much of Fellini’s films, a suffocating man, trapped inside his car, inexplicably begins to float into the skies, only to be abruptly tugged back to the ground. But it is also an indelible image that shatters any preconceived illusion of “typical” elements in a Fellini film. The film, 8 1/2, literally marks Fellini’s work on 8 1/2 feature films (the “1/2” derived from collaborative direction films), and proves to be a transitional film in his artistic career. In addition to being his final film shot in black and white, the subtle forms and religious iconography of his earlier neorealist films have been replaced by precisely composed, comic absurdity and exaggerated, hyperbolic imagery – of what was to become his signature, Felliniesque, style. His alter-ego on this surreal, introspective journey is Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni), a successful director of films “without hope” who takes a holiday at an exclusive health spa in order to overcome a creative dry spell. But Guido is not a suffering, tortured artist. He is narcissistic and self-indulgent, preferring to spend his time networking with wealthy resort patrons and arranging liaisons with his oversexed mistress, Carla (Sandra Milo) than in formulating ideas for his next film. In fact, Guido’s words prove hypocritical and contrary to all his actions. His creative retreat is spent surrounded by people who are most familiar with him: his mistress, his wife Luisa (Anouk Aimee), his producer (Guido Alberti), and several actors who want to appear in his film. He claims to be in the process of creating a simple film that “would bury all that was dead” between Luisa and him, but approves plans to construct an elaborate movie set for a science fiction film. He supplements his mineral water treatments with cigarettes and alcohol, leading a life of excess instead of undergoing physical (and psychological) cleansing and purification. Unable to derive inspiration from his chaotic environment, he immerses himself in the distraction of childhood memories and indulgent fantasies: conversing with an emotionally inaccessible father; reciting the magic words to a hidden treasure; sneaking out of class to watch the carefree Saraghina (Eddra Gale) perform a sensual dance; attempting to tame the women in his life using circus props. In essence, Guido is searching for balance: between childhood traumas and idealism, the sensual and the intellectual, artistic integrity and commercial success. Inevitably, Guido is as much a reflection of Fellini as he is of ourselves: striving for greatness, only to achieve the ordinary and familiar… with episodes of momentary abstraction in between.
